Hi there. My name is
Carmen Mardiros, webmaster of http://www.mardiros.net/scotland/ which you so kindly listed in your
pages. I am very grateful that you did. I was overwhelmed by the number
of people visiting and appreciating my site coming from your site so I
decided the site deserves a dedicated domain. Therefore, I decided to
move the site to http://www.scotland-flavour.co.uk and I was wondering if you could take
the time to update the URL address (link) with this new domain. I am so
sorry to trouble you and thank you very much for your time. Thanks,
Carmen
"My wife and I were recently in the UK
and climbed Mount Snowdon.
We had planned to do Scafel Pike
and Ben Nevis,
but a series of misadventures, luggage lost by the airline and bad luck
with the weather, prevented us from doing these two. We did do Beinn
Na Caillich on Skye.
A short mountain but a lot of fun! We plan to return. "
"Alan. I'm a journalist working for the
government funded independent charity website 24hourmuseum
and in my research on a story about the Carrick
clipper I came across an image on your site of the old ship. The image
is the perfect illustration for my story. If you have any objections to
our using it, or wish us to carry any copyright information, please let
me know. I look forward to hearing from you. Cheers. "
"Hi Alan. Just back from sunny Scotland
its a big country and there is a lifetime of walking but the weather
puts me off doing a great deal there. I have just been looking over
your web site. There is a lot on it and it looks great. You are welcome
to use some of my pictures if they are good enough. Do you trek on your
own? I have great trouble finding anyone who is willing to take the
time and explore."
" Hi
Alan. Arran is my second home, such a beautiful place! I'll be going
over there in a few weeks again, I can't keep away from the place
:) Take care. "
"Very nice site which reflects exactly
my own sentiments and ideas regarding the scottish wilderness
experience. Well done.Planning a trip up Loch Mullardoch with my
Canadian canoe and wondered if there are any access restrictions that
you know of. Also could you recommend a good pitch for our tent, we
wondered about atop the little knoll by the narrow stretch of the loch.
Any info most welcome. Happy wandering. Dave and Jon."
"Hi. I edit a small regional magazine
which is distributed to around 1200 members of a society. One of the
members has written a short story about climbing Buchaille Etive Mor
and I would like to know if it is permitted to publish in black and
white photos: Buchaille
Etive Mor (b) and Buchaille
Etive Mor (c).
Hope you can help."

"I am in the process of planning a 10
day Holiday in the west highlands two of us are looking to do a route
in a canoe over approx 4-6 days the route decribed sounds ideal could
you send me info on where to hire a canoe from and any other helpful
info. "
"Hi Alan, Just to let you know I have
visited your site and have downloaded some of the pictures to show my
friends. I am grateful about the Torridon article, it is the only
expedition that I can recall wherever we went that still interests me.
I remember the long and impressive walk across the sandstone slabs, the
day just seemed to last for ever. Regards,"
" Has
anyone climbed the Northeast Pillar Austrian Route or the Lauper Route
on the Eiger? I would like to correspond with someone with information
on those routes. "
" Hi Alan. Any information on the
Monch in the Bernese Oberland would be extreamly appreciated. Iam
proposing to attempt this in September of this year. Any help you can
give will be gratefuly received. Regards. "
" Your site is marvelous. I am
traveling to Southern Spain in October and have been looking for
information on the area. Your site is packed with it and such great
pictures too.. THANKS. "
" Your site contains the following
statement: "On a good day some two hundred climbers attain the 4800
metre summit [of the Mont Blanc] - second highest in the continent of
Europe to the 5600 metre Mt.Elbrus in the Caucasus." This is a common
bloomer. It implies that there are no other mountains in the Caucasus
than Elbruz which are higher than 15,777 ft, which is not the case, as
a good atlas will show. Peakware ( www.peakware.com
) lists eight Caucasian peaks which are higher than Mont Blanc.

ALPINISMO 9
dicembre 2002. Nepal: le
ultime notizie di

hanno raggiunto recentemente la cima del Tengi
Ragi Tau, importante montagna di
6943 metri situata nella regione del Solokhumbu e
molto
conosciuta e fotografata dai trekkers (v. foto

Questa bellissima montagna non era stata ancora salita. A seguito
dell'apertura con la famosa 101 Peaks List redatta

riuscito
nell'ascensione senza l'utilizzo dell'ossigeno. ( http://www.intraisass.it/ )
"Thank-you
Alan for including my web site. I think your site
is wonderful...even has lots of pictures of the Meteora which we
visited in 2000.. An amazing place that. The site obviously reflects
that you love Greece as much as my husband and I do. My only regret is
that we did not travel to Greece and the islands earlier in
our lives. Although I don't rock climb myself, I find it fascinating. (
Anyone who lives in Scotland can't help but be impressed by mountains.)Once
again, Thanks a lot."
"Dear Alan: I just wanted to tell you
that your magnificent site and stunning photographs moved me to tears
as I looked at the mountains that my Father, who was born near them,
used to tell me about as a lad. I have never been there to see in
person the true grandure of those places, but your site brought them as
close to me as anything that I have ever seen. I congratulate you and
thank you for giving me a taste, through your fine work, of the places
that my Dad knew so well as a youth. My heart longs to see them in
person, but, alas that is not to be at this time. Perhaps some day! All
the best! Sincerely,"

" Hello Alan, I would like to know,
when the picture Scandinavia
glacier was been taken. I
was there two weeks ago. This outlet of Vestre Okstindbreen seems to
have only slightly retreated (maybe readvanced) since your picture has
been taken. Many Thanks. "
" Hi Alan, just visited your page on Mont
Blanc Photo Gallery. Nice
Page. Found a little mistake: under "Index of Photographs" you have one
link pointing to a photograph that's supposed to be Aiguille du Gouter
(on ascent of Mt Blanc). Actually this picture shows the Aiguille de
Bionnassay seen from the way to Gouter Refuge or from the hut itself.
Regards. "

" Hello Alan, I've just been to
Morocco and I would like to know the exact altitude of Mount Djebel
Zagora as well as the city of Zagora itself. I had no map and it took
me a quarter of an hour to jog up this hill, my altimeter indicating
1050m. Do you have this piece of information ? Thank you. "
" Dear C.A.Ingram, I've just saved
some of your wonderful pictures ( Jungfrau and Finsteraarhorn) in my
computer. If I will have your permission, these pictures will be used
in a non-profit programme. Best Regards. "
" I am developing the
country/hotels/scenery pages on Destinations
Europe and having seen
some of your Alpine pictures would like permission to display one or
two on my Switzerland pages. Thank you. "
"Hello. I saw your
fine pictures from your tour in Scandinavia. I have planned to make a
car trip this summer to Galdhopiggen and try summer-skiing and probably
reach the top of the mountain. Is it hard or impossible for a
non-professional to do it. Do they make guided trips to the top. How
often and when? "
"I found your photographs of the
Julian Alps exilarating! I made my first excursion around Vrsic across
to Slema (overlooking the Planica ski jumping centr) last year and am
looking forward to more exploration this year and hopefully an attempt
on Triglav next year. I wish you well on your future expeditions! "
"Hi there. I am trying to find out some
information about Blair hospital
the first refuge on Mt Blanc
in the 1700's. Do you have any information about it. The reason that I
am interested is my maiden name is Blair. Many thanks. Regards."
"Just typed in the word Snohetta, and
up popped your
pics. Brought back some
memories.!!! On the 15th February 1992 there was an avalanche
on Snohetta with seven
climbers involved, one of the climbers being the Lord Mayor of Dombas,
who sadly died. The other members of the climbing team, as far as I
know, survived. I dont know what there names are, as we were never
told. I was one of the drivers of the "Haglund" snow-vehicle, that took
the medical team up to Snohetta, and rescued the other climbers. I'm
not looking for praise or anything, it's just that, since that day, I
have always wondered about the climbers we rescued, how they where, and
how they are now. There was a presentation at the range head, presented
to the AMF(L) for their help in the rescue. The colonel went to the
range head to accept the presentation, and left myself and the other
driver, (my crew mate) outside with the vehicle, so we never got to see
the two climbers who made it to the presentation, or any of the others
we rescued. If by any chance you know who they where, or know how to
get in touch with them, could you please let them know, that I have
often thought about them, and hope they all recovered ok. Regards and
Best Wishes."
"Hello. I've seen your web site with
pictures of the Alps. I was looking at it because my dad took hundreds
of slides while climbing in the Alps and elsewhere. I can't remember
what many of the pictures are of and have put some on the web - www.allthecritics.co.uk/alps/index.html
If you're interested and can spare a few minutes I'd be grateful if you
could let me know what some of the pictures are of or where they were
taken from."
"Julian Alps don`t belong to
Balkan!!!!!!!! They are a part of Central Alps!!! You should learn more
Geography! That`s the same like I would say that Loch Ness is in
England! Otherways everyone knows that it is in Scotland! Why are you
people always put us as Balkan nation??? I must tell you that we have
(except unfortunate history) nothing common with other Balkan nations!!!
"
"Alan, do love your photos of Monte
Rosa ( love the old time
gear I learnt on ). As a fellow photographer I know how hard it can be
to get the right shot while actually doing the climb. Cheers."
"Hi Alan. Graeme Able pointed me
towards your excellent site. I recall a memorable trip with you in
1976, which included Mt Blanc. Are you still a mean card player?"
"Alan, Enjoyed your photos. I am
planning to spend a few days in the high atlas at the end of August and
wondered whether you would be able to provide some advice about where
to go. "
"Alan, My name is Matt. I will be in
Morocco over the summer and I was thinking of climbing Mt. Toubkal. I
would like to do this myself or with a partner but I can not find much
information about the mountain, the terrain or the area. I was
wondering if you could help me find information or direct me to a
source about Mt. Toubkal. I basically needed to know where to start
(Imlil?), what the terrain and temperature is like, how long it takes,
etc. I would appreciate any information you could give me. Sincerely."
"Dear Alan, I found your article about
hiking in the Alps very nice and interesting and would like to ask a
piece of advice from you. I am looking for (with two or three friends
of mine) for an approx. two-week long trekking journey in the Alps
which is not technically demanding but involves some good peaks. We
have done the Haute Randonnée Pyrenéenne two years ago (you know from
the Mediterranean Sea to the Atlantic) and we are looking for something
similar but shorter. We have heard about an interesting route from one
of the Swiss lakes to Italy, but I don't know the route nor when may I
find information on it. If you know this route or a similar please
advise me where may I find info on the web and if I may bother you with
asking some specific questions when I will know what to ask. Thank you
in advance. Best regards."
"I am a student from Poland and I love
mountains. I want to go in this summer to Picos de Europa and I would
be greatful for your advice. Could you send me some information about
this region of Europe? And can I ask You some questions about it?
Regards."
"Hi Alan, thanks for your
answer and some helpful links. I'll write to you if I have other
questions. Thanks."
"Alan, that's brought back a few
memories, looking at these photo's of our Scandinavian tour. Think I'll
need to loose a few pounds!!! I don't even know if I still have photo's
from that expedition, think they were thrown out!! What happened to the
pictures from the summit of Kebnekaise, or was it too cloudy as I
recall!!! Cheers."
"Alan, We returned in Dec. from Nepal
where we also did the Manaslu Trek. Enjoyed your pictures and write up.
I have enjoyed the rest of your site as well, esp. the Swiss Alps where
I have also spent considerable time. I have found an error in photo
captioning - in the Alps Photo Gallery. Alps Index #18 is labeled
"Jungfrau from Monch". The photo itself is captioned "The Bernese
Oberland from the summit of the Monch". However, the photo clearly
shows the Monch and the Eiger in the background and appears to have
been taken from the area of the Wetterhorn. http://www.caingram.freeserve.co.uk/Alps-htm/monch.htm
. Best Wishes."
" Alan, Glad to be of
assistance with the photo caption. We will be spending 3 weeks in
Grindlewald this summer. I hope to climb the Wetterhorn while there. We
have done the Eiger, Jungfrau, Monch, Gspaltenhorn, Blummlisalphorn,
etc. all in the western part of the range, but have not done much in
the eastern part. Have fun in the mountains! "
"I enjoyed looking at your photos of
the Swiss Alps. I visited Switzerland 2 years ago and I was wondering
if you had any photos of Bonderspitz? It is near the town of Adelboden
near Kanderstag. Thank You so much for your time"
( Dear Alan, Thank
you so much for the web sites. I appreciated your help with finding
photos. Thank You Again Courtney )
"Thanks for the Jungfrau contribution
to worldisround.com.
Great photos. I never got as high up as you, but you'll notice that I
put one in myself on the tram that goes from Lauterbrunnen to the top
of the Jungfrau."
"Dear
Alan. I must say that your effort in promoting local Malaysian islands
to the rest of the world is really wonderful. First of all, let me
introduce ourselves. We are a small team that provides affordable
personal tour guidance for both local and foreign visitors to our
beloved country Malaysia. Take note however that our current services
is currently limited to areas within the Peninsular of Malaysia. We
were hoping that you could somehow promote our services to your closest
friends or colleagues should any of them have any sights on visiting
the Peninsular of Malaysia in the near future. We can assure that our
services would be professional but yet affordable for everyone. Should
you have any enquiries regarding the subject, please do not hesitate to
contact us via email shaaris@cari.net.my
or by my mobile +6 0162499434.
Thanking you in advance."
" You have a really nice and
informative site! The "black sheep" is there though - Highalpex. I
thought it was well known that this is a very bad company? I even
stumbled over a website about it. I have a friend who was ripped off,
that's why I let you know. http://www.geocities.com/climbersinfo/
The facts there talks for themselves. "
"I like your pictures of Phang Nga bay
although the longtail boat showing in all the photo's is a bit
irratating I have lots more photo's if you want. "
" Hi Alan. Just visited your Web site
and have been looking at the photos of P. Pangkor. Very nice indeed.
Would you recommend this place? I suppoose I should mention what I am
seeking before asking the question: I am a seasoned "backpacker" and
have roughed it in places only found in your worst nightmares; but I
have stayed in my fair share of 5* hotels as well. This holiday is
really for my new girlfriend - she is in her early 40s and has never
stepped foot out of the UK and this holiday needs to be a memorable one
that she will never forget; 3 weeks in Malaysia. I really
want the beach holiday (about 5-7 days) to be the most perfect for her.
Looking for somewhere very, very quiet, between £20-£30 per night for
the room. Is there anything you can recommend? I was going to go back
to Tioman Island, which I last visited 10 years ago, but I think I
would be rather disappointed with it now. Any help/advice you could
give to me would be most welcome. Regards and continue travelling my
friend - never let the grass grow..."
"
Hello Alan. I met Nazri at Pulau
Tioman in 1974 and stayed at his little hut on Nazri's Beach. After
which I have made many trips back. In fact only today 29 June
I went down to the travel agent hoping to return to Tioman and look for
him. We have been friends since and he came to Singapore once to visit
with his wife. Is there anyway you know how I can contact
him? I certainly like to go there in July.Cheers
"
"Hi there, I am from Malaysia. I was
surfing the net trying to find some nice photos on historical places in
Malacca . And i am glad that i found your site as the photos here are
big, nice and clear. Anyway, i am a bit suprised that you didn not
include A Famosa for your Malacca's photo collection (or did i
overlooked?). If you have any, may be you can put it in as it's a very
interesting place to visit. Thank you."
" Hello Alan,I
have just found your great site and have had a good time looking at all
your beautiful pics.We are going to Langkawi next April,so i was
especially interested in the Pantai kok photo's. We are staying at the
Berjaya resort [ burau bay ] . How near is this resort to
Pantai kok???, [ i'm pretty sure it's fairly near ].What time of the
year were your pic's taken??,if you can remember!!!.The area looks very
scenic,we were in Thailand in march, and we loved it there,so so thought
we would give Malaysia a try next. Thanking you."
"
Dear Alan,In the course of
searching the web for images about Malaysia we came across your webpage
Peninsular
Malaysia. We are a virtual
travel agency called travelchannel ( http://www.travelchannel.de)
located in Hamburg/Germany, providing both extensive travel information
and booking facilities. As we consider Malaysia as one of the top
destinations of the current travelling trend, we are writing an article
about it. For illustration is essential to information on the web, we
would kindly like to ask you for digital images of Malaysian landscapes
because we have seen lots of beautiful ones on your websites. Can you
please tell us about copyright conditions and who to address for the
images if that is not you?We would certainly
give full credit and link the images to your website. We would be very
happy if you could help us in any way. Thank you
very much!With my kind regards,"
" Really enjoyed your account and
photos of Malaysia. I travelled a similar route a couple of years ago
and your description brought the wonder of the place back to me all
over again. Cheers. "
"Thank U
Alan for dat lovely pangkor pic.... u opened the inner beauty of
Pangkor, she is beautifull. i might spend some time there..say..if i'm
from Kl so that place is quite strange to me..could u describe it a
little..? thanks a bunch. "
"Hi. Love your photos and your website.
We are going to Koh Ngai Island off the coast of Trang in mid January
2002. Not as dramatic scenery-wise as near Krabi, but less crowded. I
was wondering if you knew of a Thai style, well run, middle-of-the-road
price-range Guesthouse in Trang - if you have travelled that far south.
Most of the places I have seen on the web are large hotels with marble
lobbies. Thanks for your help. "
"Hello,I'd
just like to take a moment to thank you for the existence of your
fabulous 'Images
of Indonesia' website. I
was in a tight spot tonight trying to arrange a Power Point
presentation featuring photos of Sumatra (specifically Medan, Lake
Toba, Sibloga and Padang). Do you know how hard it is to find
a photo of Sibolga? So thank you:-)
"
"Dear
Alan.I saw your beautiful
photos of Lake
Toba and Sumatra - I am wondering if
it is possible for me to use the one of Lake Toba on my website - and
provide a link to your website also?I
also love to take pictures, but unfortunately my 30 rolls of film met
with an 'accident' in Australia and as I am currently living in the UK,
it will be another two months before I get back to Toba.I
am setting up a profit share business there - to help them - no doubt
you would have noticed they are suffering considerably from the
economic and political crises of the past few years.I'm
doing this virtually on my own, limited resources, so a slow journey,
but getting there.I would be very
grateful if I could use your picture/s even for a short time.
They are the best on the web I have seen.Regards."
"Hello. i'm a uni. malaya student. i'd
like to know more about the funicular railway in bukit bendera . If you
have the information could you please send me all the details about it."
( "Hello. thanks for the info. that u
gave me. hope that we can contact each other some other time. bye."
)
"Alan, Thank you for your updates. I'll
be surfing the net soon. Well, global warming is indeed an increasingly
recognized issue. There had been many talks on the preventive measures
but very little action had been taken though. This should be
re-enforced and people need to be educated more. Perhaps, if you come
back to the same spot you've been 10 years ago and compare them, they
might be totally different now ! Each individual can play a very
important role in making sure that the greens stay green. If all the
travellers from all around the world raise the same concern through
their website, imagine what the changes they can do ! My only concern
is that my children and my grandchildren might not be able to see the
green world like you did ! I haven't seen snow my whole life ! I miss
that the last time I was in Australia for a business trip. I was at the
top of the Blue Mountain (2 to 3 hours from Sydney, I guess) and was
told that it had snowed a few days ago. Well, I hope your White
Christmas had been wonderful and merry ! It must be very cold under
that freezing temperature ! Another new year coming, so, Happy New Year
to you ! Best wishes. "
"Alan, Hi, how are you today ?
Travellers like you hardly have time to write back but thank you so
much for your time ! I picked a traveller from the highway 10 years
ago. He was hitch-hiking - something that Malaysians don't do ! So,
maybe someday, when you're visiting Malacca again, I might be able to
give you a ride too. You can keep my contact number, just in case.
Also, there're a lot of construction work in Cameron Highlands right
now. Lots of trees are gone and jungles become smaller. Many people
complain especially with those mud-slide, land-slide and all. It is
becoming warmer up there. I hope the natives are not affected much. Did
you manage to visit them ? Lastly, Merry Christmas and keep up the good
work. I'll be visiting your web-site for new updates ! Cheers "
" Greetings from
Malacca, Malaysia ! Looks like you miss Cameron Highland. If you come
around again, you may want to put up a few days up there. Very relaxing
with plenty of fresh air. Also, nice website ! "
"Like your route through Malaysia and
Thailand. Do you recommend any particular beaches
or Islands in either Malaya or Thailand that would offer exceptional
dive sites?. Booked my flight and received all my shots. Were there any
areas that were not totally tourist infested? Cheers"
" hello, i am from indonesia, this
time i search foto adventure for collection and for screensaver, i hope
you can give me solution for searching picture like http or you can
send me more picture. for your attention thank you very much. best
regard."
"Sawatdee Krab. How are you in new
millennium year ? I looked your website already. It was interesting
web. Glad with you about your hobby to be release in internet by
yourself. I think that many people like your web and send mail for
suggestion to you. "
"Dear Mr. Ingram, First, let me
introduce myself. My name is Sutee and I am a rising high school
senior. I am currently working on a web site, for the Thinkquest
Internet Challenge ( http://www.thinkquest.org
), an international competition where students develop and promote web
sites with the intention of teaching about a particular area of
interest. I am working in a team made out of two other students and
myself to create an entry entitled, “Experience Thailand,” which will
present information about Thailand and her people in an interesting yet
meaningful way using interactivity and an innovative design. We need
your help in order to create a high-quality and informative web site.
While gathering resources and research material on the Internet, we
found your fascinating web page. We are writing to request permission
to reuse some of your content which may include textual information,
movies, and photographs to enhance our site. We will incorporate them
with our existing content in an original way. Also, due credit will be
given for each item and a link back to your web site will be included
on the credit and links pages. This web site will be strictly
non-profit and is intended for general use by the web community. If you
desire more information about our project, don’t hesitate to e-mail me
back. An example of the type of site we wish to create can be found at
one of the team member’s old site: http://www.thailandlife.comIt tells about Thailand from the
perspective of a Thai teenager and has been featured in many newspapers
and magazines worldwide. We intend to build on the wealth of
information it offers to the visitor as well as adding a multitude of
new features. Thank you in advance for your support. Your prompt reply
will be greatly appreciated since the deadline for our entry is in a
few weeks. Thinkquest Team C007418 Sutee Dee, Nattawud Daoruang, and

Hi Alan.I would like your

"
Dear Mr. Ingram: I
am an anthropology student at Florida State University in Tallahassee,
Florida, USA. I am involved with a Museum Studies Class and our exhibit
will showcase underwater archaeological sites throughout the world.
Titled, “Submerged! The World of Underwater Archaeology”, our exhibit
will be displayed in the Florida State University Museum of Fine Arts
between May 16 and July 3, 2003. For my part, I am highlighting the
history of ancient watercraft throughout the Pacific Rim. Some of my
research has led me to your website. I am asking for the permission to
utilize an electronic copy of one of your photos. The photo I would
like to borrow is: “Maori war canoe" from Images of New Zealand. You
will be given full rights and credit by allowing us to use your photo.
This is a student-run exhibit and we hope to impress the importance of
underwater archaeology and the history of watercraft to local
schoolchildren, alumni and fellow students during its short summer
presentation. Sincerely, "
"Hi. We are a new website and
we've chosen youas
a possible interested party in our site content
Essentially we are an organised information station for all
aspects of Queenstown and New Zealand. ie: Travel,
Accommodation, Activities, Gifts, Weather, Maps, and Nightlife.
In the very near future we hope to supply automated
bookingsfor
tourist related products in New Zealand. Thank's
for the enjoyment of visiting your site. All the best for
the future."
"Great Website. I'm planning to travel
to New Zealand next year for two weeks of photography. Did you carry
full gear and a tripod on your treks? Any way to get terrific photos
without all-day hikes?"
"Alan. Very impressed with
your website- some tremendous photos. Enjoyed the New Zealand section
especially, having been out there last year with the family. Managed 4
days skiing there although unfortunately didn't get much walking done.
Best wishes. "
"Great views of New Zealand. Do you
have any more water fall shots. I'm going on a trip there with my
fiancee and she wants to see water falls. Where are the best?
"
( "Alan. Thanks for
the pictures of waterfalls. We are really looking forward to the trip.
I'm actually from Wellington. My fiancee is an Essex girl. "
)
"If
you are interested, there are at least two other major set of lists for
peakbaggers in the USA. The Appalachian
Mountain Club (AMC) 4000
Foot Committee maintains a list of 4000 foot and higher mountains in
the state of New Hampshire (There are 48.), a list of 4000 foot
mountains in New England (There are 67, including New Hampshire, Maine
and Vermont.) and a list of the New England 100 Highest. Each year
certificates are given to those who complete one or more of these
lists. There is also an award for those who do them in the winter
(approximately December 21 to March 21). The second list is that kept
by the Adirondack
Mountain Club (ADK) of
the 4,000 foot summits in Adirondak State Park in New York. there are
46 summits on this list, three of which are actually not quite 4,000
feet, but are kept for historical reasons. The AMC also awards for
doing New England AND New York called the Northeast 111 (Though the
count is not exactly 111, the name is kept for historical reasons.)
Also, there are lists of the 4000 footers in the Southeastern states
which are posted on americasroof.com. I compiled these lists for West
Virginia (WV), Virginia (VA), Tennessee (TN), Georgia (GA) and North
Carolina (NC). There are something over 1,000 qualifying summits over
4,000 feet in these states. Some of these are shared by two states. In
particular, WV and VA share several, as do TN and NC. VA and Kentucky
(KY) share one 4,000 foot summit. (There are three such summits in KY,
though a KY list has not been formally posted.) These lists are "new"
and have not been subject to a vigorous review. There will be
corrections. I already have some corrections to be made, but have not
posted corrected lists. Nevertheless, they are more complete and
accurate than lists derived from the USGS GNIS data base. So far there
is no "official" recognition for doing these lists. americasroof.com
also has lists of summits posted for each US state, but most (except
for those which I have compiled, the 6,000 footer lists and the New
England and New York lists) are derived from the USGS GNIS data base
which is notoriously inaccurate and which only lists those which have
names. See the states named above to see examples. These GNIS derived
lists have different starting elevation criteria - Florida, for
instance, starts at 30 feet and the highest "summit" is 345 feet.
My wife and I were
recently in the UK and climbed Mount Snowdon. We had planned to do
Scafel Pike and Ben Nevis, but a series of misadventures, luggage lost
by the airline and bad luck with the weather, prevented us from doing
these two. We did do Beinn Na Caillich on Skye. A short mountain but a
lot of fun! We plan to return. I hope the above info is of interest to
you. "
" Hi Alan - love the pictures . As you
might already know, the picture of Hallet
Peak from Emerald Lake is
actually a picture of Dream Lake and Halletts, Emerald Lake is
directly at the base of Halletts. You have
Dream and Nymph Lake switched also."
" I saw your Death Valley page and
thought you might enjoy Wickiup. www.wickiup.com Death Valley Gallery
has photos of the place by Edward Weston and Ansel Adams. Wickiup also
has the firsthand account of pioneers travelling west in covered wagons
to reach the California Gold Rush but stranded in Death Valley - the
first to see it (1849), also the first book written about Death Valley
(1891) and the first tourbook for Death Valley (1938 by a woman). You
might also like the Sebastian Tarabal topic - first explorer to find a
land route to Alta California for the Missions. Sebastian was an Indian
from Baja California. Have a wonderful New Year."
" As a native Californian and
Yosemite lover, I'd like to comment that I've never heard of bodily
injuries, serious or otherwise, inflicted on humans by bears in
Yosemite. The injuries are all in the other direction, to the best of
my knowledge, as bears which have become campground "pests" are
destroyed. I understand that the animal responsible for the most
injuries (or is it deaths) to humans in Yosemite is the deer. Maybe
you're thinking of grizzlies (ironically the California symbol on the
state flag and hunted to extinction long ago). They're still around up
in Montana, Alaska, etc., and evidently do warrant a bit of worry, but
only a bit. In future kindly devote your energies to humans, the
animals who really deserve a bad rap. Cheers! (PS: If my information is
out of date, please enlighten me.) "
"Thank you
for a very interesting web site, which I came across by happenstance. I
enjoy perspectives of America's geography from others. I share your
appreciation of Rocky Mountain National Park, where I have camped with
my family several times. Thank you for sharing your words and
photographs with us."
"Your Grand Canyon and Yosemite tours
are simply incredible. It's not only the pictures , but the
descriptions are also terrific. We went to the North rim of the Grand
Canyon in June 5 years ago, but when we arrived, it was snowing! We
didn't have the guts to start hiking down. Our loss!"
"Journey Down the Colorado is awesome.
I'm dying to go to Arches and Canyonlands, but I haven't found the time
yet. Two good friends went in November and said it was great--Desert
Solitaire and all that. I had never heard of Colorado National
Monument, though, and this is the second time I've seen an amazing
picture of it. Zion is still my favorite places in the world though
(that and Big Sur)."
