• "Look's like the maoist problem in Nepal is getting worse, on www.trekinfo.com there are a few reports of trekkers being mugged and maoist's asking for donations etc, but it seems as though the main trek routes are ok. Don't think it would stop me going unless things got very bad and the foreign office advised not to go. Maybe airlines will stop going to Kathmandu from Europe if the trouble persists, I think KLM stopped their service last summer. So it maybe difficult and expensive to get to Nepal. I have just returned from a 2 month stay in Nepal, I was a volunteer in a school but also trekked in Chitwan and Langtang. I fell in love with the Langtang district, how could you not, the forests, mountains, wildlife and the people. I went just after the strike when there were no tourists I felt like me and my Swiss trekking mate were the only tourists there, the Lama Hotel was empty! I want to return to the district soon and hope to do a peak. However I am not familiar with mountaineering at all, the trek to Langtang was an eye opener for me as I had never done anything like it before, but after seeing the mountains I promised myself I would get to the top of one and as the Yala peak seems the most popular one in the area I want to conquer it. Although being a townie the trek and just living in Nepal really tested me and my fitness and I feel I handled it well, but I am under no illusions that climbing a peak is a different kettle of fish but I have to start sometime, hence me e-mithering you, how hard is it, how different is it to the trek from Dunche to Langtang, what equipment is essential, how does it differ physically, is it a good first peak, guide or no guide,how much for a guide, how long does it take, and finally, although I probably know your answer, is it worth it? • "A small group of students from Quabbin Regional High School are taking part in a worthy humanitarian effort called Project Nepal. For the past three years these students have been corresponding with students from Bhanu High School which is located in the small village of Bandipur, in Nepal. Quabbin students have also raised money to benefit the Nepalese students. With past funds they have been able to provide them with a library and a water purification system. These efforts are greatly appreciated by students of Bhanu High. It also shows the results of teamwork on the behalf of the Quabbin students. Through their correspondence, the students have formed special friendships that many unfortunately never have the opportunity to experience. It was these friendships that inspired a trip to Nepal last year. However, due to the unrest in the area, the trip was canceled. Yet, the students at Quabbin have not given up. They wish to bring several students from Bhanu High to Massachusetts, next October. This would be an amazing opportunity for both parties, especially the Nepalese students. Not only would they be able to experience American culture, but it will be an educational exchange between the students. To make this trip possible, Quabbin students need to raise $7,500. We had initially decided upon the Annapurna Circuit with an attempt to climb Pisang Peak but for a number of reasons have now decided upon a shorter trek. We really fancy the Annapurna Sanctuary but, as suggested above, wish to incorporate an attempt on a trekking peak also. We were considering Tent Peak but, apart from one member, have little climbing or mountaineering experience between us. We do have quite a bit of Scottish winter hill_walking experience but appreciate that is not the same thing. Whilst browsing the web, I came across your site with it's brief description of Rakshi Peak and this appears to fit our needs quite well (either on it's own or as a warm up for Tent Peak should we still wish to try that) Unfortunately, as you are no doubt aware there is little written information about Rakshi Peak (it's certainly not mentioned in most of the guides I have and only merits a brief mention in Bill O'Connors book) I wondered if you are in a position to provide any tips or info regarding the route, nature of this climb etc.I know I am being a bit cheeky asking as I am aware that you are selling a CD Rom which probably includes what I am after but also goes far beyond the scale of my immediate needs. We were US Peace Corps volunteers in Nepal and we did it during the Desain holiday period. We also went up to the Ganja La where we hit a furous snowstorm. We made it over the pass but then spent a day working our way through waist_deep snow and remained lost for another day before finding our way into Helambu. I am planning to do a trek to ABC this November and am looking for a couple of challenging side trips which do not require technical skills. My question is _ Does the climb to Rakshi Peak, which you have described in your website, require technical skills? What special equipment is necessary for attempting the climb and where can these be hired from? Would I need to go through a trekking company or would a guide suffice? I have trekked in the Himalayas before, upto altitudes of 4600 meters but have no training or experience in mountaineering. I would be grateful for your advice. Regards, Vijay"
