is a landlocked, communist state in southeast Asia, bordered by Burma ( Myanmar ) and China to the northwest, Vietnam to the east, Cambodia to the south, and Thailand to the west. The Mekong River forms a large part of the western boundary with Thailand. Vientiane is situated on a bend of the Mekong river, which forms the border with Thailand at this point. in north central Laos, on the Mekong River
about 425 km north of Vientiane. The current population of the city is about 22,000. The city was formerly the capital of a kingdom of the same name.
