may be climbed in several different ways. Hikers can reach the top by a trail from the valley floor. The trailhead starts 2 miles ( 3.2km ) from Half Dome but the circuitous route is 8.5 miles ( 13.7km ) long. The final ascent is accomplished by metal cables up the peak's steep, rounded east face. Rock climbing routes lead directly from the valley floor up the sheer NW face of Half Dome. The vertical granite wall is one of the major challenges for rock climbers in the USA along with those of El Capitan and the Diamond Face of Long's Peak. Other rock routes ascend the south face and the west shoulder. |
