Here you trek from one tea-shop / lodge to the next, eating and sleeping in the lodges. This is possible in all the popular trekking areas eg Everest, Annapurna, Langtang. You could hire a porter to carry your rucksac.
Here each trekking group is self-sufficient and carries all food, cooking and camping gear. This is necessary to visit remote areas eg Hongu Valley, Manaslu Circuit, Dhaulagiri Circuit, Kangchenjunga, where there are no tea shops / lodges. The number of porters required increases dramatically with the number of days / trekkers involved.
Here a combination of the above two methods of trekking is employed - using tea-shops / lodges where possible but carrying camping / cooking equipment and some food supplies so that more remote locations may be reached than with pure tea-shop trekking. Using tea-shops / lodges where possible would also reduce the overall costs of pure camping / organized treks.
