Trekkari
gives information about trekking in the Finnish language. The first
issue of Trekkari was published year 1988, the publisher was then The Finnish Alpine Club. This
site gives information for other
interested outdoor people. Unfortunately we are only able to run it in
Finnish although some 20% of hits come from other countries - we guess
these to a large extent will be Finnish readers.
We
have however translated a short text for mountaineers interested in
climbing Baruntse.
We offer
a selection from the Nepalese arts and crafts market:- textiles,
religious statues, decorative items and more. Our assortment comes from
small workshops around Kathmandu displaying the outstanding handicraft
art of Nepal. The site also includes photos from the Indian &
Nepal Himalaya and other regions from the Middle & Far East.
SHIVA Charity (UK) is involved in promoting
education in Nepal
and Sri Lanka. The Ginette Harrison School was set up in Banepa Nepal
to honour one of the world's best woman high altitude climbers. The
Babu Chiri School in Solu Khumbu is also supplied with trained teachers
from Darjeeling who are funded by the charity. George Band (the
youngest member of the 1953 Everest exibhition) will be speaking at the
Ginette Harrison Lecture in support of SHIVA charity, on the 50th
anniversary of the first ascent next year. In Nepal only 13% of boys
and 3% of girls receive a full time schooling. It is a poor and
troubled country that desperately needs investment in education . SHIVA
charity is a small but dedicated charity that is determined to help.
